The Need

Only a third of DC students graduate high school ready for college writing. Current failures across the nation cost billions of dollars in remediation annually for colleges and American companies. In our 140-character world, students need to learn to write logically, succinctly, and eloquently. The way people communicate – and especially their writing and presentation – has never been more important. One World Education believes in the power of student voice.

We believe that the instruction and learning of writing is one of the most challenging and neglected skills in education. With strong curriculum and respectful training, we believe that educators can create life-changing research and writing experiences for their students.

Our Mission, Vision & Story

One World’s mission is to transform students into writers with voice, knowledge, and purpose. Our vision is that all students become effective writers and communicators.

The One World Program started in Southeast DC at the SEED Public Charter School in 2007. Teacher Eric Goldstein was frustrated that only 20% of students were turning in their writing assignments. He challenged them to research and write about issues that mattered to them. Engagement soared when students wrote about social justice topics directly relevant to their lives.

Using a curriculum that broke down the instructional and learning process, his students began turning their research and writing into essays and presentations, which students called their One World Assignment. With the support of fellow teachers and school leadership, Eric incorporated One World Education as a nonprofit organization a year later to serve students across the city. One World has led the largest writing program in Washington, DC, for six years and has worked in Richmond, Pittsburgh, and Baltimore schools.
